High School Football Coach Awards Players Hot Dogs For Big Plays

A football team in Wisconsin has a unique way of recognizing big plays in football games.

Since the beginning of last season, Sun Prairie assistant football coach, Jim Hamilton, has awarded players hot dogs as a reward for big plays made during games, dubbing the honored players "Hot Dog Heroes."

From the Sun Prairie football Facebook page:

In 2017 Coach Jim Hamilton began awarding hot dogs to players during the game when they made a "Remarkable Play" (i.e. Touchdowns, Interceptions, Fumble Recoveries, or remarkable plays). Jim has two pockets which can only hold 4 hot dogs each, so 8 is usually the hot dog max per game. In 2017 Jim handed out 82 Dogs to HOT DOG HEROES and the tradition continues in 2018.

Sun Prairie, located a few miles east of Wisconsin's state capitol, Madison, made it to the state football championship in 2017 in the state's largest division.

Sun Prairie's head coach, Brian Kaminski, laughed when asked about the honors, saying Coach Hamilton started it last year as a way to reward players for making a big play in a game. He explained the origins of the Hot Dog Hero award and how it's handled on the sideline in an interview with The Big 1070 in Madison.
