Father Shoots Son To Save Other Son During Violent Fight

A father in Florida was forced to shoot his 30-year-old son after the son attacked his younger brother during a violent fight that started over a game of pool. Police said that their mother, Marie Maloney, called the police and said that her son, Joseph Maloney, was acting crazy and that he needed to be taken into custody for a mental health evaluation under the state's Baker Act, which allows police to involuntarily institutionalize people.

While the family was waiting for police, Joseph became violent and threatened his parents with a machete, forcing them to lock themselves in their bedroom. At one point, the boy's father, John, heard their younger son, 26-year-old James, struggling for help and found that Joseph had put him a chokehold and was holding a knife to his head.

John tried to get Joseph to release his younger brother but when he refused, John was forced to open fire on his son. He struck him multiple times and killed him.

“It was an extremely violent scene,” Martin County Sheriff William Snyder said.

Officials stated that John will not face charges for his actions.

"Mr. Maloney believed that the use of deadly force was necessary to prevent the death or great bodily injury to his younger son,” Snyder said.

Snyder added that John "was shattered" after he killed his son.

“I don’t know if there’s any way for me to adequately describe the look on his face.”
