Football Fan Who Donated Beer Money To Charity Apologizes For Racist Tweets

The Iowa State fan who managed to raise more than $1 million for the University of Iowa's children's hospital apologized after the Des Moines Register uncovered racist jokes he tweeted out when he was 16-years-old.

Carson King became an instant star after he appeared in the background of College GameDay on ESPN holding a sign asking people to Venmo him money for beer.

"Busch Light Supply Needs Replenished," he wrote. He also included his Venmo username so people could send him money directly from their phones.

To his surprise, people actually sent him money, and before he knew it, he had $6,000 in his account. King decided to donate money to the Stead Family Children's Hospital in Iowa City.

News of his generosity quickly spread, and many companies, including Anheuser-Busch, pledged to donate money as well.

When the Register approached King about the tweets in which he quoted the Comedy Central show Tosh.O, he immediately apologized and deleted the tweets.

"I had no recollection of it. In re-reading it today -- eight years later -- I see it was an attempt at humor that was offensive and hurtful," King said. "I am embarrassed and stunned to reflect on what I thought was funny when I was 16 years old. I want to sincerely apologize."

As a result of the tweets, Anheuser-Busch, which had planned to release special cans with King's face, decided to cut ties with him.

"Carson King had multiple social media posts that do not align with our values as a brand or as a company and we will have no further association with him. We are honoring our commitment by donating more than $350,000 to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics."
