Father-To-Be Killed When Homemade Gender Reveal Device Exploded

A soon-to-be father was killed when a gender reveal device he was constructing exploded. Authorities responded to a report of an explosion at a home in Liberty, New York, just after noon on Sunday (February 21) and discovered Christopher Pekny, 28, was building a pyrotechnic device along with his 27-year-old brother Michael to announce the gender of his child.

Christopher was pronounced dead at the scene, and Michael was rushed to the hospital with a leg injury. Authorities did not provide any information about his condition.

Trooper Steven Nevel, the spokesman for the New York State Police Troop F, told Times Herald-Record that while officials determined the device "was not being built or made for malicious purposes," the New York State Police and NYSP Bomb Disposal Unit are continuing to investigate the tragic incident.

Authorities did not provide details about the device or say what caused it to explode.
