WATCH: #CFBPlayoff Chair Explains why Gophers got jumped by 2-loss teams

It happens every year, and some might even say that it's deliberate in an attempt to get talkability and attention, but for the first time in its existence the Minnesota Golden Gophers are a part of the controversy surrounding the first College Football Playoff rankings of the 2019 season.

The controversy for The Gophers surrounds the fact that they ranked in at #17, four spots lower than their AP ranking, and behind SIX two-loss teams (Kansas St., Notre Dame, Michigan, Wisconsin, Auburn and Florida) and four one-loss teams (Oklahoma, Utah, Oregon, Georgia) despite remaining undefeated on the season.

After the rankings were released, Rob Mullins who is the chair of the CFB Playoff selection committee joined ESPN to explain why the Gophers were leap-frogged by teams with lesser records and locked in at #17.

The quote is transcribed below, and the full video is also below...

RECE DAVIS: " Is there a ceiling on [Minnesota & Baylor] in the judgement of the committee should they stay unbeaten because of their schedule up to this point?

ROB MULLINS: "Obviously we put them where they were when you look at schedule strength. Baylor played three non-conference games and in those three non-conference games those teams have four total wins. When you look at Minnesota's resume, the committee had a long discussion about it. Again a great year, but of their conference opponents they've only played one Illinois with a winning record. That's kind of how the committee placed them at 12 & 17.
