When “American Girl” by Tom Petty comes on, Dr. John Cooper never skips it. It’s his wife Rhonda’s favorite song, and it always makes him think of her. Music has been at the center of John’s life for more than five decades. He started by reading the morning announcements over his high school PA system and has been on the air since 1973, working every shift and rising from music director and program director to senior executive roles. Along the way he’s hosted classic rock, classic hits, and oldies, and he was inducted into the New York State Broadcasters Hall of Fame, the honor he’s proudest of. Friendly, informative, and smooth, he’s thankful for every listener who has spent time with him on the radio.
A New Jersey kid at heart, John saw his first concert, the Lovin’ Spoonful, back in the ’60s, and his favorites today include the Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry, and Trombone Shorty. Off the air he collects jukeboxes, loves Halloween, and volunteers with the Gary Sinise Foundation, supporting veterans and first responders. He’s a Disney World devotee, too, and would be a Disneyland regular if it were closer to home. Treat him to a chocolate glazed doughnut and you’ve made a friend.
